Needle vs Cannula: what’s the difference?

Cannula vs Needle

We often get asked by our patients: „Is it better to use cannulas or needles?“. The answer is that this largely depends on a number of factors. Our cosmetic doctors are trained to use both of techniques. However, every patient is better and one method might suit the area being treated better! Today, we are breaking down the main differences between cannulas and needles!

The needle

-Traditional method for injecting filler

-Short and sharp

– Greater precision

The needle is the classic method for injecting dermal fillers. The needle is short and sharp and pierces the skin easily. The needle must pierce the skin multiple times repeatedly across the treatment area to ensure the product is distributed evenly. Because the needle is sharp, there is a risk that blood vessels beneath the skin will be pierced. The main benefit of a needle is precision, as the placement of the needle tip is placed just above the area where the filler will be distributed.

The cannula

-Newer method of injecting filler

-Long, blunt and flexible

-Greater volume with less entry points

In comparison, the cannula is a less popular technique, but is quickly becoming far more popular. The cannula is blunt, long and flexible. The cannula works by being inserted at an oblique angle through an entry point made with a needle. The cannula’s length and flexibility allows it to distribute the product along a greater area with fewer injection points, working very well for treatments like cheek enhancement and jawline enhancement. With the cannula, there is a decreased risk of bruising and piercing the blood vessels.
