How to avoid catching coronavirus?

Sadly there is a lot of misinformation on this subject. Garlic mouth gargles, ‘immune boosting’ vitamins and tea, essential oils, vitamin C and D, nasal saline sprays will have no effect in preventing or treating coronavirus. Many of the treatments which allege to prevent viruses are expensive and have no reputable evidence to support these claim.

Luckily there are measures that are free, scientifically proven, and backed by the World Health Organisation. Regularly and throughly cleaning your hands, covering your mouth when coughing/sneezing, avoid touching your face and practicing social distancing. It really is that simple!

Stress and Coping

This is a stressful time for many people, fear and anxiety about a disease can be overwhelming. Things you can do to support yourself:

  • Take breaks from watching, reading or listening to news stories including social media. Hearing about the pandemic repeatedly can be upsetting. Avoid anxiety provoking feeds and obtain information from factual, reputable sources such as Gov.uk
  • Take care of your body. Remember to eat healthy, well balanced meals. Get plenty of sleep. Quit smoking and protect your lungs. Exercise daily, whether it be a walk/run outside or a living room fitness session (there are many fantastic free apps with home exercise programs available).
  • Try to maintain a routine despite being on lock down. This includes waking at an appropriate time, changing out of pyjamas, and making a plan for the day.
  • Relaxation. Try to engage in activities you enjoy such as reading or arts and crafts. Consider meditation, stretching, breathing exercises and practicing mindfulness. Again there are many free apps with guided meditations available.
  • Stay connected. Talk to your household members or call/face time friends and family regularly.

Take Care of Each Other

It is important that we all come together as a society and support one another through these difficult times. Be considerate of others and avoid panic buying, toilet paper will not cure the disease!  Support local small business, help an elderly neighbour with their shopping or call those friends who might not have a large support network. Do your little bit of good where you are; it’s those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world.
